Maybe, just maybe, there is hope for this country. Or at the very least, Americans aren’t as stupid as previously imagined (though they still managed to re-elect Bush, which blows gaping holes in that argument).
In a new poll conducted over the weekend it was revealed that Bush’s approval ratings have slipped three points to an all-time low of 31%! This is even lower than it was back in 2001 when Bush spent most of his presidency on vacation in Texas. Analysts assert that his declining numbers are a result of the on-going fiasco in Iraq, a weak stance on domestic issues, and what is perceived as a mass evacuation of Bush’s administration by his cohorts, such as the resignation of CIA chief Porter Goss amid a flurry of speculation regarding his role in Duke Cunningham’s poker and hooker nights at the Watergate, which the now-resigned in disgrace Representative used to push for defense contracts.
For the past week the nets have been buzzing about Bush’s declining numbers, fueling hope for the midterm elections that will take place this Fall. The Democrats need to take only 6 seats to gain a majority in the Senate and 15 to take control of the House, and with Bush’s approval looking as though it will continue to slide due to his obstinant refusal to back down from his controversial choice for Goss’ replacement, it is begining to look as though the Dems just may be able to reassert themselves and ensure that Bush will spend the next two years of his presidency as a lame duck, with no political capital with which to pursue his disastrous policies. Who knows, maybe democracy can work.
