January 2006

So parents in America these days seem to have gone nuts on the things they name their children, or they way they spell the things they name them. I’m not even talking about celebrities here. Like the silent “h’s” for example.

things like Sophia spelled Sofiya, or Natalie spelled Nathalie. And those are both fairly simple.

I’m sure you know other examples.

To keep up with this trend however, if we have another daughter I want to name her Khymbherlhi.

:)

Mmmmm, the Deschutes Brewery Bond Street Series continues to impress.

The lastest release is Hop Henge, a tasty, proper IPA. 7%, available at the brewery or in 22oz bottles at select retailers.

As I heard from a friend the other day, this beer reminds him of the first great beers that Deschutes Brewery served him when he got to bend 8 years ago. It has a craft brewery flavor, and thick hop character. Just as an IPA should.

I highly recommend picking one up. I’ve you enjoy IPA, you will enjoy the Hop Henge.

So the show technically started on 28Jan, but what the hell.

Anyway, if internet radio hadn’t already burned me out on this dude’s sad bastard songs, I’d probably still think he sucked after this performance. He wasn’t bad or anything, but I am definately not a fan of his style of music. To make things worse, he had his guitar capo’d at the 12th fret and played the cowboy chords. Anyone that knows me very well knows how I feel about capos: fuck ‘em. Learn to play the damn chords necessary with the guitar in standard tuning. Capos are for n00bs. Also, if you’re capo’d at the 12th, you’re playing octaves of the standard chords. You could get the same notes out by playing a 12-string guitar. Actually, this would sound much better than two guitars with one capo’d.

wow. 18 days, not a peep. That totally sucks.

Let’s see, what has happened in the last 18 days…

14 days ago, I turned 27.

Oh shit, I was going to go chronological, but damn - here’s something that I failed to even mention. December 24, about 9:30 am. I do down to the parking lot downtown where I left my car the night before since it was xmas weekend and I had been having too much fun. Anyway, some bastard, size 10 Vans wearing motherfucker had walked over the hood of my car, denting and scratching it enough to make it expensive to fix, but hardly enough to consider actually paying the deductible. Fucking car insurance…almost always too expensive to use….anyway, I digress…yeah, that sucked. Thanks asshole.

Back up to date…I have been working an insane amount, trying to get my new hire fully trained and get all the stuff that only exists in my head out to him so he can take over my sys admin position.

We took our daughter to the doctor for her 15-18 month checkup last week, and she was a showstopper. She busted out a ton of her words (of which she has so, so many more every day), and really impressed our pediatrician. Proud daddy am I. She’s such a wonderful, bright little blessing and it’s really fun to see her show off for the doc. She did have to get 4 shots that day though too, and that part was much less fun. I saw pure terror in her eyes…it was really not a fun thing to see. But she’s really tough - for as awful as the actual shots were, she was pretty much recovered by the time we were in the car.

I have put some serious seat time into the PSP…it seems psychotic to work at a computer for 10-12 hours a day and then pick up a PSP and sink a couple more hours into that, but damn, there’s no one awake at my house, so what the fuck, right?

I handed down the old, lovable ThinkPad T30 and upgraded to a T42. The T42 is nice and sleek, and light, and it is nice to have a brand new battery, but damn did I love that T30. It was already nice and used when I first got it. But now I am clicking away on my first new ThinkPad. I have so far been impressed by the Lenovo ThinkPads. This is the third one I’ve added to my shop’s roster and all have been super reliable and nice as the IBMs always were.

We finally cleaned up our garage! Yeah, our garage hadn’t really been put together since we moved in. About half the garage was a complete wreck. But last weekend, during Laney’s nap, we completely cleared out all the bullshit and got everything organized. We also put together my futon and set it up in the garage, so it’s almost like a bonus room in there now. I have room to set up my drums too, so as it gets a little warmer those will certainly get some use.

Anyhow, there’s an update for you all. I’m sure you feel much more informed now. I’ll try to get back in the swing of writing more often.

Unintentionally Geeky Joke in Apple’s Share Price

Unless you’re the sort of person who immediately recognized why the folks at Google originally sought to raise $2,718,281,828 in its IPO, you might want to just pass over this story. A reporter at News.com noticed an extremely unintentional inside joke with Apple’s closing share price today. On the very day the company officially announced its first Intel-based product, Apple’s stock price closed at $80.86. If you don’t get it, it’s time to read up on your computer history. No, there is no way at all that this was intentional. However, that doesn’t make it any less amusing.

That is totally awesome.
