I am now the proud admin of a Mac OS X 10.4 web / ftp / wordpress server. My boss can’t go 10 minutes without saying “Podcast” or sending me three emails about the so-called phenomenon and he asked me to set up some space to test the technology.
So I grabbed a G4 533 with 896MB and an 80GB hard drive, wiped the disk, and installed OS X 10.4, followed by Wordpress. That is one hell of a webserver.
No, it’s not live yet - we have absolutely no content to podcast, presently, but when I get the static IP punched through, and the site goes live, I’ll pass along the link.

Man, you always get to do all sorts of fun stuff. Where do you work, and are they hiring?

(BTW: E-mail me, as I’m curious what the hell you do for a living, anyway — sounds far more entertaining than most)

Hmm. Can’t really see how this particular technology (if downloading audio files and putting them on your iPod so you can listen to them later really constitutes a ‘technology.’ OTOH, a lack of technological foresight seems to be my chief professional flaw–though I maintain that most people still don’t give a figgy fig-nut about ebooks. But I digress) pertains to the work your firm does. On the otherhand, kickass opportunity to fiddle around with stuff to no particular end! Nice.

Yeah, the “technology” comment was sarcasm. I talk shit about podcasting all the time.
Wikipedia says that the difference between podcasting and regular-old downloading audio and video files is the subscription model. Whatever.
And marketing geeks are big on blogging…it’s a “whole new arena” to sell people stuff. It could be cool though, if we end up doing something full of wit and humor. I honestly hope it evolves into something cool…and extension of our website, etc.

Yeah my hackles raise when I hear the term “podcasting” almost as much as when I hear “think outside the box”. (Also something I think apple foisted upon us, if I remember correctly.)
There is to “casting” to it. The “cast” part of the word is short for or related to “broadcast” which is not what you are doing. If you set up your computer (”subscribe”) to download something every so often, it is not being broadcast to you…you are downloading it in an automated fasion. This is quite different than having it just beaming around the ether ready for you to translate and view it.
What really pisses me off is that when everyone started freaking out about “podcasting” I couldn’t figure out what the deal was, so I had to research it, only to find out that I was right…there is no need to freak out….it’s just downloading an MP3 file from a website every so often. So not only is the “cast” part of the word not valid….the “pod” part isn’t either, since you can play it on anything that can play an mp3…
Stupid.

“think outside the box” definately pisses me off more than “podcasting”.
But podcasting is definately up there.
