I think I’ll be burning discs until I have a car stereo that I can hook the iPod to. And by that I imply integration, where the stereo can truly control and exploit the greatness that is iPod.
And actually, I burn audio CDs all the time at work to send radio reels to prospective clients.
The itrip sucks. If only for the fact that you can’t shuffle the entire ipod without hitting the frequence change tracks that jump you to a different station. But I’ve had very little little trouble with the modulator I have. Occasionally, when you drive a long way…you’ll move into an area where the frequency you were previously tuned to now has a real station on it, in which case you have to readjust….but such is life.
FM modulators take me back…I used to run one in my 83 Tercel 4wd to get my wicked vintage Discman to play through the stereo. I wish I could remember the model number of that thing…it was way old, like 1987. Metal case and everything. I remember reading a review of it on an audiophile site a couple of years ago saying that it is one of the finest sounding CD players ever built. Not that I could ever tell in the car, running it through an FM modulator, into my Clarion cassette deck, into a hodgepodge of homemade speaker boxes and home stereo speakers….
you are correct. That device transmits the iPod’s signal to one of several FM frequencies. You then tune your car radio to one of those frequencies that does not have anything on it, and voila, your iPod plays through your radio.
My wife had an iTrip. It sucked, then it broke. Neat. Then we found a device (at TJ Maxx, of all places) that plugs into your cigarette lighter, holds your ipod in place, and gives you a choice of about 6 FM frequencies (admittedly, this is pretty weak in comparison to the itrip’s barrage of frequencies, but it’s all we’ve needed so far in the most densely populated state in the union. So I reckon it’s good for most purposes). Perhaps the neatest thing about it is that, by virtue of being cigarette lighter-powered, it not only doesn’t drain your iPod’s battery, it actually charges it up whilst you travel. Good times.

is similar to what I’m talking about, but much less… uhhh… generic. And missing the clamp thingy that holds the ipod in place so you’re not trying to hold it in your lap or something.
Alas, the one Kate has is far too generic for me to find it online right now, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

Hmm…burning discs. What a quaint notion.
I may have to try it out here one of these days, just for nostalgias sake.

Wait, this http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=12-2055 works for connecting an iPod to a car stereo? Please let me know if I’m misunderstanding this, because I just found a new excuse to take a roadtrip (it’s getting pretty difficult these days with the gas prices…)

Similar to this, but I swear it has more than four frequencies.
